Introducing SPECS: Social Prescriptions Engage Cultural Seniors
Growing older brings many transitions. Older adults may face feelings of isolation or loneliness that can have an impact on their mental or physical health. However, these are not inevitable parts of aging. Staying connected is seen as vital for maintaining mental and physical health as we age.

The Community Waterfront Heritage Centre received funding from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP). Senior volunteers connected with the Community Waterfront Heritage Centre are leading this project to develop a social prescription program to attract seniors to cultural activities and special events to support social participation and inclusion of those 55 plus and reduce isolation.
We are looking for volunteers to work with us on this project. A volunteer link worker is a compassionate, reliable, and resourceful individual with strong communication and organizational skills. They play an important role in connecting participants to cultural activities that may interest them. Training and support are provided to the volunteers.
The CWHC is spearheading this project, but we aren’t working alone. We are working with other cultural organizations in Owen Sound to develop a wider range of activities and programs.
If you would like to be a part of this project, reach out to us! You can call us at 519-371-3333 or email specs@waterfrontheritage.ca. We are looking for organizations to partner with on the program and volunteers to assist with the process of pairing individuals with activities.
