We were pleasantly surprised on June 9th to see the arrival of the Algoma Intrepid in the harbour. The Intrepid is a 650-foot Equinox Class bulk carrier owned by the Algoma Central Corporation, and has made salt deliveries to Owen Sound before, with the last visit being October of last year.
The surprise of seeing the ship was due largely to the fact that our salt shipments generally arrive in October. At least, that has been the case in recent years. With this early arrival, some people are saying that salt shipments are coming in early to ensure that we will be prepared for the upcoming winter due to salt shortages in the 2024-25 winter. It remains to be seen if this is true, but in any case we won’t complain about seeing extra ships in the summer.
